Power-Hoarding

Power-Hoarding

If I have enough leverage, no one can hurt me or control me. The thing I can't afford to lose is my position.
What it's really guarding
Powerlessness, being at others' mercy, the helplessness the original wound made unbearable. Underneath it all, what it protects is real: safety, security, never being at someone's mercy.
How it shows up
What it is
Organizing life around accumulating and protecting leverage (money, status, position, social clout) as a defensive moat. Decisions get filtered through what increases or threatens the stockpile. Distinct from ambition: the aim is having something that can't be taken, not the accomplishment itself.
Serving you, or running you
Serving

Healthy ambition and security-building.

Running you

Life organizes around protecting the stockpile and no amount ever feels safe.

Why it came, and what it costs
Why it came
When powerlessness was the wound, accumulating power became the cure. Leverage promised you would never again be at someone's mercy. The moat is a felt guarantee of safety.
What it costs you now
In lovePartners feel kept in a power dynamic rather than met as equals. Intimacy requires mutual vulnerability, which the pattern reads as exposure. Love becomes another asset to control rather than a place to soften.
At workHoards information, decisions, and credit. Builds dependence and political moats rather than trust. Caps collaboration because sharing power feels like losing safety.
In the bodyA guarded, braced vigilance, tension in the upper body and jaw, eyes tracking threat and advantage, a chest that won't soften. Sympathetic readiness organized around protecting territory.
What it becomes
The two states
Clenched

Coiled around the hoard, watchful, letting no one near.

Settled

It uncoils, lets people approach the pile, holds power lightly.

When it settles
Power held lightly. You build security and let people close, knowing safety was never only leverage.
Befriend · the smallest move
Let someone close to something you have been guarding.

Safety built on leverage is a cage. I can be powerful and still let people close.
