Chronic Illness Focus
“If I'm unwell, I can't be expected to perform, and people have to be gentle with me.”
What it's really guarding
Life's demands, disappointing others, taking full responsibility for one's choices. Underneath it all, what it protects is real: care, gentleness, a legitimate reason to be held.
How it shows up
What it is
Unconscious amplification of symptoms, identity organized around health problems, illness used (outside awareness) to shape relationships.
Serving you, or running you
Serving
Real attentiveness to the body and its needs.
Running you
Identity organizes around being unwell and illness quietly shapes the relationships.
Why it came, and what it costs
Why it came
When sickness was the only state that reliably drew care or excused you from impossible demands, the body learned that being unwell was safer than being well.
What it costs you now
| In love | Care becomes the currency of the bond, which traps both people. Partners feel guilty wanting more and resentful of the constraint, with no clean way to name it. |
| At work | Unreliability framed as health, missed commitments, a slowly shrinking sphere of capability. Hard to address without seeming cruel. |
| In the body | Attention magnetized inward to symptoms, guarded musculature around perceived-fragile areas, shallow conserving breath, low overall vitality. Energy bound up in monitoring the body. |
What it becomes
The two states
Clenched
Hunched around the symptom, attention magnetized inward.
Settled
It unbends and lets itself be tended simply because it matters.
When it settles
Receiving care without earning it through symptoms. You let yourself be tended simply because you matter.
