Dissociation
Dissociation
“I just leave. One second I'm here and then I'm somewhere far back behind my eyes.”
What it's really guarding
Overwhelm with no exit, the full impact of a threat the body could not otherwise survive. Underneath it all, what it protects is real: survival, escape from the inescapable.
How it shows up
What it is
Going blank under stress, losing time, feeling unreal or far away, watching life rather than living it.
Serving you, or running you
Serving
The emergency exit that gets you through the unsurvivable.
Running you
You vanish from your own life whenever intensity rises.
Why it came, and what it costs
Why it came
When a situation was too much and there was no escape, leaving the body was the only exit available. Dissociation was the emergency parachute.
What it costs you now
| In love | Partners feel you vanish mid-conversation, especially when things get intense or intimate. Presence, the thing connection requires, is exactly what disappears. |
| At work | Loses focus under pressure, misses chunks of meetings, struggles with high-stakes moments that trigger the checkout. Reliability wobbles when it matters most. |
| In the body | Vacant gaze, depersonalized sense of self, floaty-frozen quality, breath barely moving, proprioception blurred. Deep dorsal vagal exit. |
What it becomes
The two states
Clenched
Barely visible, drifting off the paper.
Settled
It solidifies, colors back in, anchors into the body.
When it settles
Staying present with support. You remain in the body, knowing this moment is survivable now.
Befriend · the smallest move
Feet to the floor, name five things you can touch.
